Background of the Study
Rape remains one of the most heinous crimes, with profound consequences on victims and communities. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, the prevalence of rape has become a critical concern due to its far-reaching social, psychological, and economic impacts. Socio-cultural factors, including patriarchal attitudes, inadequate legal frameworks, and stigma attached to sexual violence, contribute significantly to the persistence of rape cases (Ezenwa, 2023). Victims often face severe trauma, isolation, and long-term psychological disorders as a result of the assault. Additionally, the social fabric of the community is disrupted, with trust eroding between individuals and institutions. The lack of effective victim support systems and preventive measures further exacerbates the situation, making it imperative to examine both the causes and consequences of rape. Emerging research highlights that rape is not only a criminal act but also a manifestation of deep-seated gender inequalities and power imbalances (Okafor, 2024). This study intends to appraise the multifaceted causes behind rape incidents and explore the subsequent effects on victims and society. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the research will integrate perspectives from sociology, psychology, and law to provide a comprehensive analysis of this critical issue (Chukwu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Rape in Awka South Local Government Area continues to be a pervasive issue, yet its underlying causes and wide-ranging consequences remain under-investigated (Ikechukwu, 2023). The limited research available does not fully capture the socio-cultural, legal, and psychological dimensions of the crime. Victims face considerable barriers in accessing justice and rehabilitation services, and the societal stigma surrounding rape further silences the issue. Additionally, ineffective law enforcement and weak judicial responses perpetuate the cycle of violence and impunity. Without a thorough understanding of the causes and effects of rape, policymakers and support agencies remain ill-equipped to design and implement effective prevention and intervention strategies (Amadi, 2024).

To identify the primary causes of rape in Awka South.
To analyze the consequences of rape on victims and society.
