Background of the Study
Rape remains one of the most heinous crimes, with profound consequences on victims and communities. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, the prevalence of rape has become a critical concern due to its far-reaching social, psychological, and economic impacts. Socio-cultural factors, including patriarchal attitudes, inadequate legal frameworks, and stigma attached to sexual violence, contribute significantly to the persistence of rape cases (Ezenwa, 2023). Victims often face severe trauma, isolation, and long-term psychological disorders as a result of the assault. Additionally, the social fabric of the community is disrupted, with trust eroding between individuals and institutions. The lack of effective victim support systems and preventive measures further exacerbates the situation, making it imperative to examine both the causes and consequences of rape. Emerging research highlights that rape is not only a criminal act but also a manifestation of deep-seated gender inequalities and power imbalances (Okafor, 2024). This study intends to appraise the multifaceted causes behind rape incidents and explore the subsequent effects on victims and society. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the research will integrate perspectives from sociology, psychology, and law to provide a comprehensive analysis of this critical issue (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Rape in Awka South Local Government Area continues to be a pervasive issue, yet its underlying causes and wide-ranging consequences remain under-investigated (Ikechukwu, 2023). The limited research available does not fully capture the socio-cultural, legal, and psychological dimensions of the crime. Victims face considerable barriers in accessing justice and rehabilitation services, and the societal stigma surrounding rape further silences the issue. Additionally, ineffective law enforcement and weak judicial responses perpetuate the cycle of violence and impunity. Without a thorough understanding of the causes and effects of rape, policymakers and support agencies remain ill-equipped to design and implement effective prevention and intervention strategies (Amadi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To identify the primary causes of rape in Awka South.

  • To analyze the consequences of rape on victims and society.

  • To propose policy interventions aimed at reducing rape incidents and supporting victims.

Research Questions:

  • What socio-cultural factors contribute to rape in Awka South?

  • How does rape affect the psychological and social well-being of victims?

  • What policy measures can be adopted to mitigate the incidence of rape?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Socio-cultural factors significantly contribute to the incidence of rape in Awka South.

  • H2: Rape has long-term detrimental effects on the mental health of victims.

  • H3: Strengthening legal and social support systems reduces the incidence of rape.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of the causes and consequences of rape in Awka South, Anambra State. The insights will be invaluable for policymakers, legal authorities, and social welfare agencies in designing effective interventions. By addressing the root causes and offering support mechanisms, the study contributes to creating a safer, more just society and promoting the rehabilitation of rape victims (Ezenwa, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the causes and consequences of rape in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State. It focuses solely on the local context without extending to broader national comparisons.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Rape: Non-consensual sexual intercourse achieved through force, coercion, or threat.

  • Victim: An individual who suffers harm as a result of a criminal act.

  • Stigma: The social disapproval and discrimination faced by individuals associated with a negative attribute.
